The Wachman’s
Bakery of Magic

Imaginative and original artwork

Illustration time: 12 hr 33 mins

The Wachman's Bakery is a little dream of my own, a glimpse of the life I imagine one day sharing with my husband. Living long-distance means I do a lot of imagining these days, and there's something quite beautiful in that, dreaming a home into being before it exists.

I played with three different colour combinations for it. Funny thing about illustrating, sometimes you're just reaching for colours almost at random, trying them on until one of them finally feels like something. It's not so different from a writer chasing that one perfect character, the one they hope everyone will fall a little in love with.

Colour has this quiet power to completely reshape how an illustration feels. That's exactly why I love it, finding the palette that lets a story show up as its truest, best self. Honestly, it might be my favourite part of the whole process.

I'd love to know, out of the three, which one speaks to you?
